RECOGNIZED ACROSS DECADES

Rule76 was not invented in a workshop. It was recognized across decades.

Rule76 was not invented in a workshop. It was recognized across decades.

Long before Rule76 had a name, its patterns were appearing in the work. Questions about evidence. Questions about value. Questions about why organizations act before understanding. Questions about what happens when technology becomes the answer before the problem is clear. Questions about why some lessons endure while others disappear. At the time, these experiences were not called Rule76. They were simply the work. Only later did the patterns begin to reveal themselves as parts of something larger.

The system came later. The evidence came first.

EXPERIENCE ↓ REFLECTION ↓ PATTERN ↓ PRINCIPLE ↓ FRAMEWORK ↓ APPLICATION ↓ LEARNING

The path was cumulative, imperfect, and recognized largely in retrospect. That matters. Rule76 should not rewrite its own origin to make the story appear more intentional than it was.

002 / THE EARLY PATTERN · BEFORE THERE WAS A NAME

Start with the problem. Not the mechanism.

Early professional experience exposed a recurring tension. Organizations were increasingly capable of implementing sophisticated systems. But implementation capability did not guarantee clarity about the problem being solved, the value being pursued, or the evidence supporting the decision. The pattern became increasingly difficult to ignore: A mechanism could be delivered successfully while the original business question remained poorly understood.

PROBLEM — What are we actually trying to improve? ↓ EVIDENCE — What tells us this problem exists? ↓ VALUE — Why does changing it matter? ↓ JUDGMENT — What response does the evidence justify? ↓ MECHANISM — What technology, process, method, or action is appropriate?

Purpose before mechanism.

The language would become clearer later. The instinct appeared much earlier: Do not begin with the answer simply because the answer is available.

003 / THE WORK · EXPERIENCE AS EVIDENCE

Different roles. Recurring questions.

Over decades of work across enterprise technology, consulting, transformation, sales, alliances, leadership, and value realization, the settings changed. The underlying questions often did not.

01 / WHY NOW? — What has changed enough to justify action?
02 / WHAT IS ACTUALLY TRUE? — What does the available evidence support?
03 / WHAT IS ASSUMED? — Which parts of the argument remain unproven?
04 / WHERE IS THE VALUE? — What outcome matters, to whom, and how would we know if it improved?
05 / WHY THIS RESPONSE? — Does the proposed mechanism actually address the problem?
06 / WHAT HAPPENS IF NOTHING CHANGES? — What value may remain lost, delayed, exposed, or unrealized?
07 / WHAT DID THE OUTCOME TEACH US? — What should the next decision inherit?

The organizations changed. The technologies changed. The markets changed. The questions kept returning.

Repetition turned experience into pattern.

004 / RECOGNITION · WHEN EXPERIENCE BECAME EXPLICIT

A pattern becomes more useful when you can finally see it.

By 2024, decades of accumulated professional experience were being examined more deliberately. Executive Leadership at Cornell created an important period of reflection. Ideas that had previously existed as instincts, questions, habits, and recurring approaches began to become more explicit.

The work was no longer only: How do I approach this problem?

A larger question had emerged: What is the system underneath the way I keep approaching these problems?

Recognition came before formalization.

The significance of this period was not that Rule76 suddenly appeared fully formed. It was that recurring patterns could finally be examined together.

EXPERIENCE + REFLECTION ↓ PATTERN RECOGNITION ↓ EXPLICIT PRINCIPLES ↓ REPEATABLE STRUCTURE

005 / FORMALIZATION · RULE76 EMERGES

Once the patterns were visible, they could be governed.

Recognition created a new responsibility. If these ideas were going to become repeatable, they needed more than memory. They needed language. Structure. Distinctions. Provenance. A way to learn without silently rewriting what came before. Rule76 began to take form as a governed operating system.

01 / NAME THE PATTERN — Make recurring ideas explicit.
02 / DEFINE THE DISTINCTIONS — Separate evidence from assumption, hypothesis from fact, confidence from certainty, and outcome from interpretation.
03 / ESTABLISH PRINCIPLES — Express ideas clearly enough to guide judgment.
04 / BUILD FRAMEWORKS — Translate principles into repeatable structures.
05 / APPLY — Allow the work to encounter real problems.
06 / LEARN — Let outcomes produce new evidence.
07 / GOVERN — Preserve origin, change, reasoning, provenance, and inheritance.

PATTERN → PRINCIPLE → FRAMEWORK → APPLICATION
GOVERNANCE THROUGHOUT

What began as instinct had to become explainable. What became explainable could become repeatable.

006 / THE FIRST APPLICATION · CVAF / COMMERCIAL

The operating system became easier to see when it had something to do.

Commercial work provided an early practical domain in which the emerging Rule76 disciplines could be applied together. That work became the Commercial Value Acceleration Framework — CVAF.

Outside-in evidence · Explicit needs and value hypotheses · Transparent financial modeling · Executive-ready judgment · Action and measurement · Governance and provenance

RULE76 ↓ COMMERCIAL DOMAIN ↓ CVAF ↓ USE ↓ EVIDENCE ↓ LEARNING

CVAF did not prove that Rule76 was finished. It demonstrated something more useful: The operating ideas could be translated into a practical framework and exposed to real work.

Application turned philosophy into something testable.

What worked could be preserved. What remained weak could be challenged. What use revealed could become new evidence. What was learned could improve what came next.

007 / EXPANSION · THE PATTERN WAS LARGER THAN COMMERCIAL

If the operating system was real, it should travel.

Commercial value was one domain. The underlying disciplines were not inherently commercial. Evidence matters in learning. Judgment matters in people decisions. Governance matters in operations. Provenance matters in data. Learning matters in experience. Hypotheses matter in innovation.

Could the same governed foundation be applied to other domains without pretending those domains were the same?

One operating system. Multiple places to test its usefulness.

008 / STEWARDSHIP · THE ORIGIN IS NOT THE DESTINATION

The origin belongs to one person’s experience. The usefulness of Rule76 cannot depend on one person forever.

BRAD PIVER · Founder / Rule76
Originating steward of the Rule76 operating system and its application architecture.

Brad Piver is the founder of Rule76 and the originating steward of the work. His experience provides important provenance for why the system emerged and how its earliest patterns were recognized. But provenance is not the same as permanent authority. If Rule76 is worthy of endurance, it must become capable of being understood, applied, challenged, improved, and eventually stewarded beyond its founder.

FOUNDERSHIP — Origin. Experience. Recognition. Initial articulation. ↓ STEWARDSHIP — Preservation. Application. Challenge. Learning. Responsible extension. ↓ INHERITANCE — What future users and stewards receive.

The founder should remain part of the provenance. The future should not remain trapped inside the founder.

The work continues. The evidence continues. The learning continues. Preserve the origin. Earn the future. Truth into action. Value that endures.
